France: Paris attack not anti-Semitic

French officials: Assault on Jewish youths not racially motivated, one suspect Jewish

Paris prosecutors have ruled that an attack on three Jewish youths, which took place earlier this month in the French capital's 19th Arrondissement, did not have anti-Semitic motives.

The youths, who were all wearing yarmulkes, were walking through the largely Jewish neighborhood on their way to the Paris branch of the Bnei Akiva movement.

Raphi Zeush, a Jewish Agency and Bnei Akiva envoy to the city told Ynet that "five Muslim and African youths came and threw chestnuts and cobblestones at them." According to Zeush, 10 more teens later joined in the assault on the Jewish boys, some of whom were sporting brass knuckles.

One of the Jewish boys suffered a broken nose and another a fractured cheekbone, while all three had considerable contusions as a result of the attack.

The three filed a complaint with police after their release from the hospital.

A Paris judicial official said Wednesday that the prosecutor's office has opened an investigation against five youths – one of them Jewish – for voluntary violence.

The assault occurred on a street where another Jewish teenager was beaten in June.
