Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman announced on Sunday that he plans to support Nir Barkat in the Jerusalem mayoral race.
Lieberman said that “Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem is our responsibility. A Jerusalem led by Nir Barkat has the chance of seriously changing its course, in the long run.

“There is critical importance to finding solutions to the significant problems and challenges Jerusalem faces," Lieberman added. “Barkat presents solutions to these problems and challenges: Creating new jobs, attainable housing, better education for all, more productive management of the city and halting the negative migration of 17,000 Jews from the city each year,” he said.
“I see the joint forces of Nir Barkat and the ‘Yerushalayim Beitenu Party’ roster as a way to actualize Jerusalem’s advancement,” Lieberman added.
In response Barkat said: “It is an honor to be endorsed by Avigdor Lieberman and the Yerushaliyim Beitenu faction's support."
“Lieberman exhibited exceptional leadership and courage opposite the challenges he faced and in the firm stance he took regarding the values in which he believes. I plan on leading the campaign for Jerusalem, Israel’s capital, to reinforce its sovereignty and bring a better future to the city’s inhabitants," Barkat said. “Avigdor Lieberman and I share the worldview that we need a strong Israel and a strong Jerusalem at its core. I view Lieberman and his faction as partners in the building and strengthening of Jerusalem.”
