Sources in Hebron: Settlers attacked Palestinians harvesting olives

Report says Jewish residents of West Bank city hurled stones at Palestinians and left-wing activists in Tel Rumeida neighborhood. Police: Palestinians were picking olives without authorization

Sources in Hebron reported Saturday morning that four Jewish settlers attacked left-wing activists and Palestinians harvesting olives in the West Bank city's Tel Rumeida neighborhood.

According to the sources, the settlers, also from Hebron, hurled stones at the Palestinians and beat them; some 30 Israelis and foreign left-wing activists who came to the Palestinians' aid were also attacked, they added.

Police said in response that the Palestinians and leftists were harvesting olives without authorization in a closed military zone; officers detained three left-wing activists.

According to the Palestinians, the settlers also threw a Reuters photographer to the ground, adding that police and IDF forces dispatched to the scene allowed the settlers to flee the scene.

Judea and Samaria Police confirmed that a report had been received by the IDF regarding a stone-throwing incident between settlers and Palestinians, adding that the Palestinians and leftists had entered the olive grove without proper authorization and therefore the harvesting was stopped.

Police said no official complaint has been filed as of yet.

Palestinians have reported of several attacks by Jewish settlers since the olive harvest began two weeks ago.
