Yigal Amir moved to terrorists' jail

Israel Prison Service decides to transfer Prime Minister Rabin's murderer to facility housing 700 security prisoners following unauthorized interviews he gave media

Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's murderer was transferred to the Ramon Prison in southern Israel on Friday morning following the unauthorized interviews he gave the media.

The Ramon jail houses security prisoners, and Amir will be placed in the prison's confinement ward.

Following the interviews, the Israel Prison Service (IPS) decided to punish Amir by withholding telephone calls, family visits and conjugal visits by his wife for three months. In addition, private belongings were removed from his cell.

At first, the IPS decided to move Amir from the Rimonim Prison in the Sharon region, where he was isolated in the confinement ward, to the Eshel Prison near Beersheba, but eventually decided to move him to the prison with the highest security classification.

Some 700 security prisoners are being held in the Ramon Prison. Amir, who is also considered a security prisoner, was jailed in a cell in one of the prison's most guarded wards.

Following Amir's arrival at his new prison, the IPS decided to remove all his personal belongings considered as a privilege from his cell, including his television set, DVD player, electric kettle, etc.

The prisoner received the minimal things an inmate is entitled to, such as a bed, a blanket, toiletries and a Bible.

Amir's transfer to the faraway prison is expected to make it difficult for his family members to visit him. The IPS views the fact that Amir gave unauthorized interviews to the media as extremely severe and therefore decided to move him to a prison housing terrorists.

In an interview with Channel 10, Amir said: "My friend married Rabbi Lau's daughter. Rabin was one of the guests. He sat by the table with only one bodyguard next to him. If I would have walked over there to shake his hand, I could have shot him easily had I wanted to."

"I was right next to him…walking around. I was there with a gun. But I didn't do it," Amir said. "I saw how easy it was. I told myself that in a few years I'll regret that I didn't do it, or something like that."
