Jordanian cancer patient denied entry into Israel

Woman seeking to enter Israel for routine treatment at Tel Aviv hospital asked to return home after being deemed a security threat

A Jordanian woman seeking to cross the Sheikh Hussein border crossing from the Hashemite Kingdom into Israel Tuesday, on her way to undergo a routine treatment at the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv, was denied entry and forced to return home.

The 46-year-old cancer patient arrived at the crossing escorted by an Israeli friend, Tzvi Shorer. "She is a Jordanian citizen who holds a Canadian passport, and was at the hospital for treatment just several days ago," he told Ynet.

According to Shorer, the woman was asked by her doctors to come back for further treatment, and has made sure with the Israeli embassy in Amman prior to her return that her visa and other relevant papers were in order.

"In spite of everything, we were told that she was a security risk and she was asked to return home," he added.

Shorer strongly protested the incident to the officers at the crossing, and was consequently investigated himself.

"This is simply an outrage; I am an Israeli patriot and will not accept such treatment. It has nothing to do with politics, and I personally am not affiliated with any political movement. This is, first and foremost, an issue of human interest," he stated.

The police said in response: "The woman in question is a Jordanian citizen whose medical record is known to us. However, following an examination by the security forces her entry to Israel could not be approved and she was asked to return to Jordan."
