'Waltz with Bashir' leads Israeli nominations at European Film Awards
Ari Folman's celebrated animation film up for four awards, 'Lemon Tree' follows with two of its own
Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman's "Waltz with Bashir" has been nominated in four categories at the upcoming European Film Awards, the academy announced in Seville, Spain on Sunday.
Also up for two awards is "Lemon Tree" – with director Eran Riklis and Palestinian writing partner Suha Arraf facing off against Folman for best screenplay, and Hiam Abbas nominated for lead actress.
The 21st annual European Film Awards will be held on December 6th in Copenhagen, with awards bestowed in eight categories.
For best film "Waltz with Bashir" will compete against "Il Divo" (Paolo Sorrentino, Italy) "Gomorrah" (Matteo Garrone, Italy), "The Orphanage" (Juan Antonio Bayona, Spain) and "The Class" (Laurent Cantet, France), "Happy-Go-Lucky" (Mike Leigh, Britain).
Folman is also up for best director, alongside Sorrentino, Garrone, Cantet, Britain's Steve McQueen (for "Hunger") and Germany's Andreas Dresen ("Cloud 9").
German-born composer Max Richter rounds off Waltz with Bashir's tour de force with a nomination for best soundtrack.
