Ben-Gurion Airport resumes normal operations

Wage dispute between airport employees, management leads to short-term strike; workers return to work at around midnight

The Israel Airports Authority workers' union has told Ben-Gurion International Airport employees Sunday night to resume normal operations, while the wage negotiations with management are continuing.

Earlier five flights that were scheduled to depart from the airport have been delayed after Israel Airports Authority (IAA) employees renewed their short-term strike in protest of the deadlock in the negotiations over their wages.

In the evening hours the IAA's workers' union held a meeting to discuss a possible general strike, while their employers asked the National Labor Court to issue an injunction ordering them to resume normal working hours.

During Sunday afternoon's talks, union representatives demanded a wage increase for airport custodians and baggage handlers and also raised the plans to lay off 120 temporary airport employees.

Negotiators for the IAA said the union's fresh wage demands were denied.

The IAA received word that the union planned to halt all airport operations and disrupt the flight schedule. Meanwhile, employees ceased loading and unloading passengers' luggage.
