LONDON – We all know those old hummus wars that focus on the question of whose hummus is the tastiest or most original. But nowadays a new front in the battle of the hummus has been launched.

After in recent years several Guinness records were set for "the largest hummus dish in the world", another attempt to break the record was registered this week. Behind the achievement stood the Israeli pavilion at the annual tourism fair in London (World Travel Market), which presented a hummus plate weighing 924 lbs and boasting a diameter of 13.8 feet.

The festive dish was prepared in honor of Tel Aviv's 100th anniversary celebrations, which were the pavilion's central theme.

The plate, which was built on a trampoline strengthened by wooden beams and covered in nylon sheets, took several hours to prepare. Several hundred pitas were handed to the visitors, and when the sign was given the crowds stormed the plate in order to try and grab a bite of Israeliness.

"The plate is part of the effort to market Israel in general, and Tel Aviv in particular, as a fun and lively destination," explained Eitan Schwartz, spokesman for the Tel Aviv-Yafo Centennial Administration.

Although it has yet to receive official Guinness confirmation, the huge plate was documented by the organizers and pictures were sent to the Guiness administration, which should decide within the next two months whether a new record has indeed been set.
