Egypt praises Morocco for promotion of Mideast peace

State-owned paper commends Moroccan kingdom for its role in 'persuading Israel to accept Arab peace initiative', says Arab states will accept Israel as neighbor if it 'retreats from occupied land, allows for Palestinian state with Jerusalem as capital'

A state-owned Egyptian paper praised Morocco Tuesday for its commitment to assisting the Israeli-Arab peace process. "It's time to develop talks in order to further the peace process and persuade Israel to accept the Arab peace initiative," Al-Ahram Weekly said.

The editorial was referring to reports on Morocco's preparations for a visit by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. It said the visit was intended to "promote cooperation and empower the Israeli-Palestinian process."

It went on to say that "the Arab states have agreed on the presentation of the Arab initiative in order to find a peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue and reinstate the Arabs' rights.

"The Arabs are willing to regulate relations with Israel and accept it as a neighbor in the region, if Israel will retreat from the occupied Arab territories and allow the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

Regarding Morocco's part in the process the editorial said, "Morocco has been playing an important role in the promotion of peace between Israel and the Arabs and has held a number of talks with Israel on the subject."

It added that "recently the talks have been renewed with the visit by Foreign Ministry Director-General Aharon Abramowitz to the kingdom two weeks ago. This visit was intended to promote cooperation and strengthen the political process between Israel and the Palestinians."

The article may have been intended as an Egyptian statement of support for Morocco in its endeavors to assist the peace process, in order to allow the latter to extend an invitation to Tzipi Livni.
