El Al will begin operating a direct flight to Brazil starting in the spring of 2009. The Israeli airline will also offer connecting flights to various destinations in South America, including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, as well as other major cities in Brazil.
The flight from Tel Aviv to Brazil will take about 14.5 hours. During the coming month the company will finalize the details regarding the new service, including flight schedules, frequency and prices.

El Al CEO Haim Romano said that the decision to introduce a direct flight to Sao Paulo is part of the airline's plan to expand its services in order to meet the needs of both the business and touristic sectors.
"South America in general, and Brazil in particular, fit in well with this strategy. Trade between Israel and South America is on the rise, Israeli tourism to South America is growing, and the continent is home to large Jewish communities and a large pilgrim population," Romano explained.
"Launching this service, for the first time in a decade, presents a series of challenges for El Al … and I have no doubt that El Al of 2009 is prepared to deal with those challenges."
