"The government has failed in its job to safeguard the people of Israel; we mustn't wait until after the elections to make the necessary decisions, and if (Defense Minister Ehud) Barak is undermining these decisions he should be dismissed immediately," Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday in response to the massive rocket and mortar fire from Gaza.

At least 36 Qassams and more than 18 mortar shells were fired from northern Gaza towards southern Israel since Tuesday night.

"Hamas is setting the agenda and taking the initiative; we are only responding," the Yisrael Beiteinu chairman added, "the Hamas prisoners are being treated well in Israel despite the fact that no one has seen (kidnapped IDF soldier) Gilad Shalit."

However, Lieberman stressed that Israel should refrain from launching an operation in Gaza before taking all of its outcomes into consideration.

Referring to an Internet ad posted by the Meretz party that called Barak "not normal", Lieberman said, "this is the first time that I agree with Meretz's campaign.

The ad was eventually removed following harsh criticism from Labor.
