Soldier suspected of killing comrade

Military judge places gag order on case in which one soldier is suspected of killing a member of his unit inside IDF base

A soldier is suspected of killing a fellow soldier from his unit, Ynet has learned, in an affair the military prosecution began to investigate Monday with the help of the Investigating Military Police.

Military Judge Colonel Nir Aviram has imposed a gag order on the details of the case following an appeal made by the military prosecution and the officers investigating the case.

The gag order prohibits the disclosure of details regarding the deceased and the scene of the suspected murder.

From the few details available for publication Ynet has learned that the incident is apparently very serious, and that the soldier may have been killed while inside the base in which he was serving.

An IDF official told Ynet that "from what is currently known and from testimonies given by witnesses we can presume that the soldier was intentionally harmed within the base. We will have to hold a calculated and careful investigation in order to arrive at the truth and impose justice on the responsible parties."

The past does not yield many examples of incidents of this kind, but a number of cases have been recorded. In February of 2002 a Givati Brigade soldier, Private Avi Danilovich, was shot by a soldier serving with him in boot camp.

The suspect is suspected of entering Danilovich's tent in the evening, aiming his personal weapon at his the deceased soldier's heart, and firing one shot.

Five years earlier a similar incident occurred in the Jordan valley. Two Engineering Corps soldiers, who had fought earlier, argued over a phone call. During the argument one of the soldiers aimed his weapon at the other and shot him to death.
