Police: Pipe bomb incident in Lod terror-related

Investigation of pipe bombs thrown at building inhabited by religious-nationalist Jews in central city of Lod leads police to believe attack was nationalistically motivated; search for suspects among Arab sector continues

Twelve hours after a pipe bomb was thrown at a house on Yaakov Plumnick Street in the city of Lod, police said there was reasonable probability that the incident was nationalistically motivated.

Police intelligence officers have been operating among the Arab population of Lod since Friday morning in an attempt to locate the perpetrators. No suspects have been arrested yet.

Thursday night, around 10 pm, a blast disturbed the quiet in the Ramat Elyashiv neighborhood that borders the old city of Lod.

Tensions have been high recently among the religious-nationalist families in the neighborhood and their Arab neighbors.

Immediately after the blast was heard, residents of the seven-story building went downstairs and discovered another explosive device that did not detonate.

Police forces arrived at the scene, and initially claimed the incident was criminally motivated. Residents of the neighborhood however were certain there were nationalistic motives behind the incident.

Police sappers spotted two other pipe bombs in the area and neutralized them.

As the investigation progressed, it became apparent that the residents of the building that was attacked have no ties to the underworld, and intelligence information collected indicated the perpetrators were Arab residents of the city, and the selection of the targeted building was not random.

"We have a lead on the nationalistic plane, and there are likely to be arrests in the future," said a police source.
