Controlled UNIFIL explosions carried out in Lebanon

Blasts alarm Galilee residents, who were not informed of controlled explosions in advance

A number of controlled explosions carried out by UNIFIL forces in Lebanon Sunday afternoon alarmed the residents of Israel's western Galilee region, who were not informed of the detonations in advance and feared they were part of an attack on Israel.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit later confirmed that the detonations , which were heard in Israel at around 4 pm, were carried out by UNIFIL.

"We heard a boom, but it didn’t sound like a Katusha rocket," Kibbutz Gesher-Ziv resident Sigalit Cohen told Ynet.

Last month the relative calm that prevailed along Israel's northern border was breached when two Katyushas were fired toward Nahariya and a community in the Western Galilee. Two people sustained mild injuries.

A week later two more rockets were fired toward the Galilee region, but there were no injuries or damage.

UNIFIL forces also prevented an additional attack by revealing three Katyushas aimed at Israel.
