Protestors urge Olmert to 'bring Shalit home'

'The PM must keep in mind that the day will come when he will stand before God, who will ask him what he did for Gilad's release,' protestor says. Bereaved father: Release terrorists behind attack that killed my son in exchange for Shalit

Dozens of people gathered outside Ehud Olmert's Jerusalem residence Friday morning and called on the prime minister to act during the remainder of his term to bring about the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.

The protestors blocked traffic and carried signs reading "Gilad is still alive." Passing cars honked in support.

"I've been going to all of the rallies for the past six months," Hani Bar-Nes said, "Israel must release all of the (Palestinian) prisoners in exchange for Gilad. Olmert must keep in mind that the day will come when he will stand before God, who will ask him what he did for Gilad's release. He hasn't done enough."

The rally was also attended by a number of bereaved parents. Roni Hirshenzon, whose son Amir was killed in a suicide bombing attack near Beit Lid on January 22, 1995, said "I am in favor of releasing the terrorists who sent those who murdered my son. We must pay any price to bring Gilad home.

"The price Hamas is demanding is cheap in compared to the value of a soldier who is alive. The conflict and the recent war (in Gaza) are continuously producing potential murderers," he said.

With his son nearing a thousand days in Hamas captivity, Noam Shalit continued his tireless mission to keep Gilad in the public consciousness.

Speaking at an all-night solidarity event organized by students of Blich High School in Ramat Gan on Thursday, Shalit sought to not only emphasize the government's responsibility to see Gilad released but also issued an emphatic plea to his captors.

"I call on the leaders of Hamas, in Damascus and elsewhere, I say loud and clear what many Palestinians in Gaza dare not and cannot say out loud – stop holding us, the regular citizens, the uninvolved, the families of prisoners who could have been home by now – stop holding us as political hostages, as hostages of an imaginary resistance," he said.
