Report: US providing parts for Syrian airline

Syrian government newspaper says US Trade Department to help Damascus rehabilitate Boeing 747 planes. Move may signal attempt by Obama administration to reach out to Syria, end economic embargo

A Syrian government newspaper says the US Trade Department has agreed to provide Syria with spare parts to rehabilitate two Boeing 747 planes out of service for years.

Sunday's report by al-Baath newspaper could signal a move by the new US Administration to reach out to Damascus and end an economic embargo of Syria.

Al-Baath quoted Syrian Transport Minister Yarub Badr as saying his ministry received the US approval to repair the two planes two days ago.

An official at the US Embassy refused to comment on the report.

In May 2004, then-US President George W. Bush issued an executive order banning all US exports to Syria except for food and medicine.
