Olmert's attorney demands Mazuz probe leaks in Rishon Tours affair

Prime minister's lead counsel urges AG to launch immediate inquiry into why media got hold of confidential details pertaining to double-billing investigation pending against PM; says will petition High Court if Attorney General's Office falters

Attorney Eli Zoher, lead counsel for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert urged Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to launch an immediate investigation on the leaks from the Rishon Tours' double-billing case pending against Olmert.

Zohar informed Mazuz that should he fail to launch a probe, the prime minister's legal team will file a petition on the matter with the High Court of Justice.

Thursday's appeal to Mazuz followed an article which ran in last weekend's Haaretz Daily, which Zohar claims was entirely based on material from the case file, and included verbatim quotes of several testimonials.

"We the see these leaks as grievous, especially once it was determined that leaking the details of any ongoing investigation is a criminal offense.

"We cannot accept this phenomena… which aims only to present a partial, distorted and false frame of events; especially when in comes to an ongoing investigation against a prime minister," added Zohar.

Olmert's team has alerted the Attorney General's Office of such leaks in the past and have asked they be probed, but were denied. This time, said Zohar, they are willing to seek a High Court of Justice ruling on the matter.

Justice Ministry Spokesman Moshe Cohen told Ynet that Zohar's plea "will be processed in the usual manner."

National Fraud Unit investigators questioned Olmert on the case last weekend. He stands to be question once again of Friday.
