EU commissioner in Syria as relations improve
A senior European Union official visiting Syria has described the country's role in the region as "essential," in the latest signs of improvement for the nation's strained international relations.
The meeting between EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and President Bashar Assad comes after years of isolation for Syria. The Syrian news agency said Monday that the meeting discussed the Syria-EU partnership agreement, which was revived in December after being on hold since 2004. (AP)
