Police to deploy in force in Jerusalem

Police to reinforce presence in capital ahead of Purim holiday, as tens of thousands of revelers prepare to hit streets; two police officers wounded after married east Jerusalem father goes on rampage earlier in the day

Police not taking any chances: Officials have decided to reinforce the police presence on Jerusalem's streets next week, in the wake of the terror attack Thursday that left two police officers lightly hurt.

Police forces will deploy in force in order to secure the upcoming Purim celebrations, the Jerusalem Police said Thursday night.

As is the case every year, tens of thousands of dressed-up revelers are expected to hit the streets during the holidays. Jerusalem's municipal government is organizing several events to celebrate the holiday, including shows for the entire family, musical performances, and a Hassidic puppet show.

Series of attacks

Jerusalem has been the site of several terror attacks since the beginning of 2008. On January 24th, 2008 a Border Guard police officer was shot to death by attackers. On March 6th, eight seminary students were murdered at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva, after an armed east Jerusalem terrorist went on a rampage in the Jewish seminary.

Last July, Jerusalem was hit by two similar tractor attacks. In the first one, an east Jerusalem terrorist murdered three people and wounded 36 during his rampage. Three weeks later, a terrorist was shot to death after wounding 18 people. Also in July, a Border Guard policeman was shot to death by members of a terror cell.

In September 2008, a terrorist driving a BMW went on a rampage in the capital, wounding 17 people, before being shot to death. In October 2008, an 86-year-old Jerusalem resident was murdered by a terrorist, before he was captured.
