British MP kisses Gaza ground

Convoy of vehicles carrying food, medicine, and toys travels 12,000 km to enter Gaza through Rafah

A British convoy that embarked 24 days ago on a journey aimed at aiding the Palestinian people of Gaza was allowed into the Strip through the Rafah crossing Monday.

British MP George Galloway, who was among those entering Gaza, said the convoy was only the beginning of his battle, and reinforced his comment with a flamboyant kiss to the Gazan ground.

The convoy, brainchild of the 'Viva Palestina' organization, included 99 vehicles that made a journey of over 12,000 km through France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and finally Egypt.

It included ambulances, fire trucks, and a boat-carrying truck. The activists carried food, medicine, and toys for the people of Gaza.

The vehicles arrived at the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing on Sunday but were detained by security forces, who objected to the transfer of anything other than medical supplies.

The activists spent the night at El-Arish where, according to reports, they were subjected to stone-throwing. Reports said Anti-Hamas graffiti was also sprayed on their vehicles.

'Viva Palestina' stated that some of their non-medical supplies were dismantled by Egyptian security for later transfer by the country's Red Cross, which will subject them to scrutiny by the IDF. Four ambulances carrying medical supplies were allowed through.
