Police plant mock bombs in 3 malls

Following Saturday's attempted car bomb attack at Haifa mall, police bomb squad manages to get through security at three Bay area shopping centers with large quantities of fake explosives

Three days after the attempted terror attack at a Haifa mall, the police managed to prove Tuesday that security at shopping centers was lacking, by successfully planting fake bombs in three of the area's malls' parking lots.

Police sappers riding vehicles carrying large mock explosives in their trunk managed to enter the parking lots of the Lev Hamifratz, Ravmad and Kiryon malls in the Haifa Bay area. Landmine parts and an explosives' activating system were hidden under the driver's seat.

In all three cases security guards failed to detect the suspicious gear and allowed the vehicles to enter both outer and underground parking lots uninterrupted.

At the end of the drill the police sappers revealed their identity to the shopping centers' security guards and conducted a short investigation of the incident to make sure that security protocol is updated.

The security officers will also be summoned for a hearing at the district police station.

Head of the Police Coastal Region Deputy Inspector General Roni Atiya said: "We are extremely disappointed with the drill's results. We see any lapse in the security guards' level of alert as severe."

Atiya said that the police will conduct similar drills in order to prevent such incidents from recurring.
