Netanyahu: Not concerned by prospect of US pressure

Prime minister-designate says ties with US strong, diplomatic pressure irrelevant; adds economy, homeland security, education will be top priority for new cabinet

Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that he is not concerned that the US administration will press Israel on diplomatic and security issues.

Any such pressure he said "is irrelevant, since our ties with the US are so strong. The only pressure is that of violent Islamic fanaticism, which threatens the world. All nations must work together to remove this danger."

The new Israeli government, he added, will work to ensure Israel's security and prosperity, "But the challenges this government is facing in order to achieve this goal are more difficult than ever."

The Likud chairman continued, saying that the first orders of business for his cabinet would be to tackle issues concerning the economy, homeland security and education.

Netanyahu, speaking at a Knesset session meant to introduce the initial 100-day work plan for the new government, said that "(members of the new government) are not here to keep their seats warm; we are here to work for the country."
