Galilee shaken by 4th false alarm in month

Air raid siren sounds in Nahariya, Akko, Carmiel, Misgav and Mateh Asher regional councils at around 11:30 am Sunday due to malfunction in alert system

An air raid siren was sounded Sunday before noon throughout many western Galilee towns. There were no reports of rockets or explosions in the area. According to the police, the siren was a false alarm due to a malfunction in the alert system. The Israel Defense Forces and the police are investigating the report.

Around 11:35 am, a siren was heard in Nahariya, Akko, Carmiel, and the Misgav and Mateh Asher Regional Councils. Many residents ventured down to shelters.

Renen Ben-David, who works in the Tardion industrial center in Misgav, told Ynet, "There was an air raid siren that lasted for about two minutes. I have no idea why the siren was activated. No rockets landed."

Sayid Hadad, from the lower Galilee town Turaan, said, "Today we are celebrating Palm Sunday in the Christian community. The siren caught us in the middle of the march and caused a big scare. The siren brought us back to the time of the Second Lebanon War when rockets were landing here."

This is the fourth time in a month that an air raid siren was sounded in the western Galilee. The three previous incidents were false alarms.

A siren was sounded on Thursday in many western Galilee towns, but after searches in the area brought up no signs of rockets, it was ruled to be a false alarm.

Two weeks ago, an air raid siren was sounded in the Galilee panhandle, but no rockets were fired. A few days prior, a siren was sounded in Kiryat Shmona. As a result, two women suffered from shock and were taken to the hospital in the city.

The last time Katyusha rockets were fired into Israel was in February when a rocket landed next to a house in the western Galilee lightly injuring three people and sending two others into shock. Damage was caused to the house.
