Blair skeptical on peace prospects

Former British prime minister says skepticism a result of Israel's new rightist government

International mediator Tony Blair said Monday there's skepticism about the prospects for peace because of Israel's new government. He spoke after meeting with Israel's new Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Blair said he believes Netanyahu understands that the only formula for peace is a Palestinian state next to Israel. But Netanyahu has pointedly not endorsed the creation of a Palestinian state.

Blair said "the only solution that will ever work" is two states – Israel and Palestine - living side by side in peace," noting that the United States strongly supports such a solution, as expressed by US President Barack Obama during his visit to Turkey.

Blair added that he thought Netanyahu would come around "if the right context can be created for peace."

The former British prime minister noted skepticism over Netanyahu's election and said there must be time for the new governments in Israel and the US to "settle down."

Meanwhile, Netanyahu's Spokesman Yossi Levy referenced Obama's comments, saying that "Israel appreciates US President Obama's commitment to Israel's security and our desire to advance the peace process."

"The Israeli government is committed to these two goals," he added.
