Syria's US ambassador: Lieberman better than Livni

Syrian envoy: Lieberman is candid, Livni spoke about peace while committing Gaza atrocity

WASHINGTON – Who said the Arabs dislike Lieberman? In an interview with CNN Sunday, Syria's Ambassador to the US Imad Moustapha said that it would be better to deal with Israel's new foreign minister, rather than with outgoing FM Tzipi Livni.

"Personally, I believe that it is better to deal with someone like Lieberman than to deal with someone like Livni," the Syria envoy said. "At least Lieberman is candid; he exactly says what he believes in. Tzipi Livni and her colleagues were talking all the time about their desire to make peace, while committing the atrocity in Gaza."

When asked about the prospect of Syrian-Israel talks in the era of the Netanyahu government, Moustapha said it was a "very concrete possibility."

'Enough is enough'

The Syrian ambassador, hosted on CNN's GPS program, added that the US had a moral obligation to sponsor Arab-Israeli peace talks, stressing that America's military, financial, and political support has enabled Israel to "sustain her policies of occupation" over the years.

"This is why the United States has a moral duty to play a vigorous creative role in brokering peace between the Arabs and the Israelis," Moustapha said. "We believe that enough is enough."

Once the US will tell Israel that the occupation must end, "Israel will be very careful not to say no to the US administration and US president," the Syrian ambassador said. "This is what we want America to do."
