President Shimon Peres on Monday made his first comments on the rising tensions between Egypt and Hizbullah in recent days, after several of the organization's operatives were arrested in Egypt.

"They are fighting without us, and this is good," Peres said, after leaving a visit to the home of  Shas spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.

"Sooner or later, the world will realize that Iran wishes to take over the Middle East, and that it has colonial ambitions," Peres said.

"The conflict between an Arab-Sunni Middle East and an Iranian minority that wants to conquer it is inevitable," the president added, after visiting the homes of Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger and Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar.

The president's words are the first to come from a high-ranking Israeli official on what appears to be a concentrated Egyptian effort against Hizbullah infrastructure in the country.

As time passes, more and more details are revealed on the organization's attempts to carry out terror attacks on Egyptian soil and to aid terror organizations in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier Monday Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called President Peres, to wish him a happy Passover.

"On the eve of Passover, we all pray for peace and liberty for all people of the region. We must not lose our hope for the way of peace," Peres responded.
