Barak ousts Cabel over dissention

Labor chairman informs secretary-general he is to be dismissed over his inability to accept Labor's participation in Likud-led government

Labor Chairman Ehud Barak announced Wednesday that he would begin proceedings to dismiss the party's secretary-general, Eitan Cabel, due to his "refusal to accept the decisions of the party's committee".

Cabel responded by reminding Barak that the Labor's committee must be convened in order to vote on his dismissal from the post.

"This is the chairman's way of uniting the lines after his echoing failure in the elections," Cabel said following the meeting between the two. "The man who is supposed to answer for this failure is busy with dismissals, sectarianism, and wiliness."

During an interview with Ynet Cabel said he was not surprised by the announcement. "I know that my friends and I are the final barrier before Labor's conversion into a one-man dictatorship," he added.

Conflict between the secretary-general and Barak increased over recent weeks as Cabel continued to publicly denounce the chairman for his participation in the Likud-led government.

In a last attempt to make peace, Barak summoned Cabel and his followers to a meeting, which was subsequently canceled in favor of the meeting during which Cabel learned he may be dismissed.

A statement released by Barak's office said the chairman had thanked Cabel for his contribution and said he believes Labor can return to its natural place as leader of the nation. It also said a substitute would be appointed in the secretary-general's place in order to take care of the party's daily management.
