Tel Aviv marathon makes comeback in celebration of city's centennial after 15-year gap. First place awarded to Kenya-native Daniel Coles, who crossed the finish lines after two hours, 38 minutes and seven seconds

Ten thousand runners swarmed the traffic-free streets of Tel Aviv on Friday morning for the first marathon the city has seen in 15 years.

 

The marathon included three routes: 5 km (3 miles), 10 km (6 miles) and a full 42 km (26 mile) marathon. Handcyclists also took part in the marathon, among them was Yisrael Beitenu MK Moshe 'Mutz' Matalon.

The marathon was won by Daniel Coles of Kenya, who came in at 2:38:07 hours. This is Coles' first marathon, as well as his first trip abroad.

 

Second place was awarded to Shay Pipman, who came in at 2:51:10 hours. Pipman seemed displeased with his result, after having expected to come in at 20 minutes under his score. In third place was David Raskai at 2:52:45. Orna Blau came first in the women's marathon, with a score of 3:07:14 hours.

Of the 10,000 participants some 2,000 were IDF soldiers and officers, with the elite Duvdevan Unit coming in first of all participating units.

 

Twelve runners suffering from dehydration and heat stroke collapsed during the marathon. They were treated by paramedics at the scene. Six of them were evacuated to the nearby Ichilov Hospital for further treatment, one is reported to be in serious condition.
