A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas saidSaturday evening that Avigdor Lieberman's remarksagainst the land for peace proposal were "destructive".
In an interview with Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung, published Saturday, the Israeli foreign minister said the proposal, according to which Israel would relinquish control of all or part of the territories it conquered in 1967 in exchange for peace and security with full recognition by the Arab world, "has not yielded any results."
"What have all of (Israel's) withdrawals led to? Hizbullah and rockets. This proposal simply doesn’t work," Lieberman said.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh said such comments "destroy any chance to seize the opportunity presented by the current US administration.
"We reject this dangerous policy; this matter requires the intervention of the international community, particularly the US," he said.
According to Abbas' aide, the Palestinian Authority "does not accept Israel's foot-dragging (vis-à-vis the peace process)."
PA officials have postulated that Israel will not advance the peace process despite comments made by senior US officials, including President Barack Obama, in support of a two-state solution.
According to the officials, the stalemate may result in the collapse of the two-state concept. "This will be a gift to those who oppose the peace process," one of the Palestinian officials said.
