Lebanese report: Spies also operated in Syria

Lebanon-based newspaper al-Akhbar says suspected spies sent by Israeli handlers for missions in Syria

The Lebanese media continues to concentrate on the recently-exposed spy ring in the country, which is said to have worked for Israeli intelligence.

The Lebanese-based newspaper al-Akhbar reported Friday that the spies had also been assigned with espionage missions within Syrian territory by their Israeli handlers.

According to the report, which relies on a Lebanese security official, the Lebanese internal security branch has transferred to Syria the content of the suspects' interrogations.

In recent weeks Lebanon has arrested 16 suspects in the affair, the most senior among them is retired brigadier general Adeeb al-Alam, who has already been indicted with severe counts of espionage.

The spy ring reportedly started operating before the Second Lebanon War, and helped Israel during the war by pinpointing Hizbullah targets.
