Human rights groups urge Jordan to scrap NGO law

International human rights groups are urging Jordan to scrap proposed amendments to a law that would restrict activities of non-governmental organizations in the kingdom.

The Human Rights Watch and Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network say the amendments would increase the government's control of NGOs working in Jordan and give authorities access to their finances without cause or judicial warrant. The two watchdogs say they sent a letter Monday to Jordan's prime minister warning the amendments would curb the ability of the NGOs to function independently. (AP)
