NY: Dozens injured in Jewish school grate collapse

According to initial investigation, incident took place as girls aged 10 to 12 were standing on grate to take end-of-year class photo

At least 36 students were injured Friday morning as a grate collapsed at a Jewish school for girls in Brooklyn. New York fire officials said that at least two of the injuries were serious, the CBS network reported.

 

The incident took place at the Yeshiva Shaarei Torah Elementary School as the students, all girls aged 10 to 12, were standing on the grate to take an end-of-year class photo, when it suddenly fell. Police investigators are looking into the cause of the accident.

 

According to eyewitnesses, some of the girls were evacuated to a hospital on stretchers, while those who were lightly hurt were treated n the scene. A NY fire official said that none of the injured girls' life was in danger.

 

According to CBS, the ultra-Orthodox Jewish school has about 260 students in grades one through eight and is located in the Prospect Park South area.
