Lieberman: World must respond to 'mad' Iranian regime

During visit to Canada, FM calls for urgent Security Council meeting on situation in Islamic Republic, says 'danger of such a regime being in possession of nuclear arms must be clear to everyone'

"The recent developments in Iran are the result of a mad regime that fires at its civilians on the street," Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Monday during an official visit to Canada.

"The danger of such a regime being in possession of nuclear arms must be clear to everyone," said the FM. "The developments in Iran demand a decisive response from the international community; first of all, an urgent UN Security Council meeting must be called."

While in Ottawa, Lieberman met with his Canadian counterpart Lawrence Cannon and other ministers. The FM told the senior Canadian officials that Israel greatly appreciates Canada's firm stance against the anti-Israel agenda of last April's UN conference in Geneva, which was dubbed "Durban II".

On Sunday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said peaceful relations between Israel and Iran would be possible if new leadership took power in Tehran.

"There is no conflict between the Iranian people and the people of Israel and under a different regime the friendly relations that prevailed in the past could be restored," Netanyahu told German daily Bild.
