Shalit: We don't have faith in the system

Father of captive soldier says until government's words translate into results, family only trusts its own efforts to bring Gilad home. IDF chief of staff says army has obligation to soldier it sent out into battle

With the three-year anniversary of his son's abduction approaching, Noam Shalit said on Wednesday evening that he has lost faith in the state's ability to secure his son's release.

"I have faith only in our own efforts. Only when words are translated into actions can we talk about trusting the system," Shalit said.

Speaking at the opening of an exhibition in Nahariya which showcases posters designed by Israeli artists to mark the grim milestone, Shalit said he hoped this would be "the last time we meet under such circumstances, I hope the next time will be much happier."

Shalit also responded to a recent poll which asserted there is broad public approval for the release of terrorists 'with blood on their hands' (with a direct connection to fatal terror attacks) in exchange for Gilad's release.

Noam Shalit said the data corresponds with the family's impression of public opinion. "It fits with what we hear on the street, with the letter we receive and in any forum where we come into contact with the Israeli public."

IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, also addressed Shalit's continued captivity on Wednesday. Addressing cadets and their families at the end of an officers' training course, Ashkenazi said: "Tomorrow will be three years since the abduction of Gilad Shalit. As commander of the IDF, I tell you now that there is not a day that goes by that I do not think about Gilad or the desire to bring him home."

The chief of staff added that "we are working through many varied channels to bring about his release. This is our duty, our highest obligation to a soldier we have sent into battle, and we will continue to work until the mission is complete. I pray that the day we have Gilad back with us, safe and sound, is not far."
