Palestinians open fire at soldiers near Gaza border

Gunmen fire RPG missiles and mortal shells at IDF force patrolling Gaza fence; troops respond with fire, reportedly hitting several Palestinians. Earlier Sunday soldiers shoot unarmed Palestinian who approached fence despite warning

Palestinians fired RPG missiles and mortar shells at an IDF force patrolling the Gaza border fence near Nahal Oz Sunday evening. The soldiers responded with fire.

No injuries were reported among the troops, but some of the Palestinians are said to have been wounded.

Earlier in the evening, an IDF force patrolling near the security fence shot a Palestinian man.

The man, later found to be unarmed, was shot after refusing to halt despite several warnings by the troops. He suffered serious abdominal wounds and was rushed to the Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba.

Palestinian gunmen often approach the security fence in order to place explosive devices along its route. IDF forces stationed in the area are tasked with preventing such incidents.

According to Palestinian sources in the Gaza Strip, the injured man was a farmer for the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun.

Earlier Sunday, Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin briefed the cabinet ministers on the renewal of terror activity in the Gaza Strip. Diskin said that over the past two years, many World Jihad operatives – who differ from the Islamic Jihad operatives in the Strip – have been able to infiltrate Gaza.

These operatives, he warned, have been able to form the infrastructure for al-Qaeda-affiliated terror cells.

The Shin Bet chief also briefed the ministers on the renewed rocket fire from the Gaza Strip towards Israel: Thursday saw the first Qassam fire in weeks, as Palestinian fired a rocket which landed in the open area at the Sdot Negev Regional Council, luckily causing no injuries or damage.
