5,000 defy Malaysia police, protest detention law

None

At least 5,000 opposition supporters are marching in Malaysia's largest city to protest a law allowing detention without trial. The demonstrators defied police who fanned out across Kuala Lumpur on Saturday and arrested dozens of people who planned to take part in the street rally.

Opposition parties hope it will be the biggest protest ever aimed at pressuring the government to scrap the Internal Security Act, which provides for indefinite imprisonment without trial of people regarded as security threats. (AP)
