IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi
announced Thursday that he was appointing GOC Central Command Major-General Gadi Shamni to the position of the Israel Defense Forces' attaché in Washington.
Major-General Avi Mizrahi, currently commander of the IDF Army Headquarters, will be appointed in his stead.
The appointments were approved by Defense Minister Ehud Barak following a decision to appoint the current military attaché, Major-General Benny Gantz, to the position of deputy IDF chief of staff.
Replacing Mizrahi will be Brigadier-General Sami Turgeman. The IDF has announced that the promotions will take hold once a changeover period is carried out.
The decision to appoint Gantz to deputy chief of staff sparked the chain of promotions, which marks the end of a long period of deliberation. Gantz is considered a compromise between Barak and Ashkenazi.
Barak wanted to promote GOC Southern Command Yoav Galant, while Ashkenazi preferred GOC Northern Command Gadi Eisenkot. Both will remain at their current positions.
