A motorcyclist ran over a police officer Saturday in the town of Bat Yam, south of Tel Aviv, and fled the scene. Police forces launched a manhunt for the man with the aid of a helicopter.

The incident took place around 4:30 PM, after police officers set up a routine checkpoint on a Bat Yam street. At one point, the motorcyclist arrived at the scene, ignored police instructions to stop, and hit the policeman before fleeing the scene.

Another officer at the site of the incident was standing at the other side of the street and was unable to fire at the motorcyclist. Large police forces were promptly dispatched to the scene and were scouring the area in search of the suspect.

A Magen David Adom ambulance team was called to the scene and treated the injured officer. After he was stabilized, the officer was transferred to hospital in light to moderate condition for further treatment.
