Hundreds mark gay center attack

Tel Aviv marchers honor victims of shooting attack at gay club a month ago

About 500 people marched Saturday to mark a month since the attack on a Tel Aviv gay center that left two people dead.

Former Knesset Member Musi Raz (Meretz,) who took part in the march, said he decided to participate in order to make clear to the many politicians who condemned the murder that they must do more in order to promote the rights of the gay community.

"The violence we saw at the club is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the violence against the community and political violence in general," he said.

'Israel less progressive than we thought'

One of the event organizers, Or Shai, said that the protest aimed to keep the issues of violence, homophobia, and human rights in Israel on the agenda.

"A wide variety of people arrived, both from within the community and outside of it," he said. "People who all care about social justice and equality."

At the end of the march, protestors gathered for a commemoration ceremony that opened with a moment of silence in memory of Nir Katz and Liz Trobiashi, murdered in the attack.

"The murder took us out of some coma we were in, a sort of bubble where we thought that even if there is no ful equality, Israeli is progressive enough," Shai said. "Yet apparently Israel is less progressive than we thought."
