CBS: 2% rise in household expenses in 2008

Central Bureau of Statistics polls shows average monthly expenses of Israeli household in 2008 was NIS 12,342 ($3,257). Top echelon spends 3.5 times more than lower echelon on education, culture, entertainment

The average monthly expenses of an Israeli household in 2008 was NIS 12,342 ($3,257), a 2% rise compared to 2007.

 

The figures appeared in a Central Bureau of Statistics report on household expenses published on Wednesday.

 

The survey showed that about half of the total expenses spent by the lower fifth percentile went towards food and housing.

 

The top fifth percentile spent almost three times more than the lower fifth percentile on transportation and communications.

 

In education, culture and entertainment, the top fifth percentile spent 3.5 times more than the lower fifth percentile.

 

As for technological gaps within the Israeli society, the poll showed that in the top echelon, there are 60 computers for every 100 people, while in the lower echelon only 13 computers can be found among every 100 people.

 

The poll surveyed 5,971 households, sampled in 171 towns in Israel.
