Alleged anti-Semite close to being named head of Unesco

No candidate has obtained sufficient votes to be appointed director-general of Unesco following the first round of balloting, the headquarters of the organization announced.

A source within Unesco said Egypt's Farouk Hosni, whose candidacy is controversial because of anti-Semitic comments he allegedly made in the past, received 22 votes of the 30 needed for election in the first round. (AFP)
