3 Chinese laborers protest on crane

Workers climb construction crane saying their salaries had not been paid, come down nine hours later after being offered NIS 20,000

Three Chinese workers protested unpaid salaries Monday morning by climbing atop a large crane at a construction site in Kiryat Ono. It was the second such protest to take place in recent months.

Police and paramedics arrived on the scene, and officers attempted to talk the workers down in order to negotiate on land.

The workers eventually came down from the crane nine hours later, after being offered NIS 20,000 (about $5,350) in cash. This is, according to the workers, part of the sum owed them by their employers.

One worker explained, "Today five of us are supposed to fly back to China. We have problem with our employers and they did not pay us the money we earned. We want the money we worked for." The dispute is reportedly over a sum smaller than $5,000.

Two months ago six workers from southern China used the same tactic to protest the conditions of their employment. Police succeeded in talking them down in a few hours.

Many Chinese workers have testified to mishandling by their Israeli employers, who sometimes employ them under harsh conditions or delay their salaries.
