China said on Thursday that stepping up pressure on Iran would not be an effective way to persuade the country to halt its nuclear program.
"We believe that sanctions and exerting pressure are not the way to solve problems and are not conducive for the current diplomatic efforts on the Iran nuclear issue," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a news briefing in Beijing.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, which include China, and Germany have agreed that Iran must give a "serious response" to demands it halts its disputed nuclear program by October 1, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said on Wednesday.
