PM goes under local anesthesia

Netanyahu undergoes colonoscopy procedure in digestive system, cystoscopy in bladder due to non-malignant polyps found in past. Tests completed succesfully, found to be within normal limits

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday morning underwent a colonoscopy procedure in the digestive system and a cystoscopy in the bladder at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, his office reported.

The tests began at 7 am and were scheduled to continue until 8:30 am. The prime minister went under local anesthesia during the procedures for about 15-30 minutes.

Netanyahu was ordered to fast before taking the tests. He arrived at the hospital with his personal doctor, Zvi Herman Berkowitz.

Dr. Berkowitz said following the tests that "the medical examinations performed were completed successfully and found to be within normal, without any findings. After a two-hours rest the prime minister is expected to return home, and will then return to his routine activities."

Cabinet Secretary Zvi Hauser reported that the prime minister had made the proper arrangements for the appointment of a temporary stand-in, if needed. After consulting Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, Netanyahu decided not to appoint a replacement.

If a stand-in were required, the cabinet secretary would have held a telephone survey among the government ministers or convened a special government meeting.

Routine tests

About a year and a half ago, Netanyahu underwent a routine colonoscopy procedure in which a small polyp was discovered. It was removed and found to be non-malignant. According to the test's medical protocol, Netanyahu was ordered to repeat the same tests within 18 months.

About 30 years ago, a small polyp was found in the prime minister's bladder, which was also found to be non-malignant. A similar test performed 10 years ago came out negative.

According to medical experts, these two tests are routine, particularly at the prime minister's age.

The prime minister will turn 60 on October 21. Last week, he became a grandfather after his daughter Noa gave birth to her firstborn son.
