Settlers suspected of robbing Arab cabbie

Shilo residents arrested after allegedly assaulting taxi driver from east Jerusalem at knifepoint, running off with GPS, cash, cell phone

Two residents of the West Bank settlement of Shilo were arrested Monday for suspicion of assaulting and robbing a taxi driver from east Jerusalem.

The Arab driver said the two hailed his cab in downtown Jerusalem and asked that he take them to the settlement. According to the driver, upon their arrival at the Tel Shilo archeological site, which is located near the settlement, one of the settlers pulled out a knife and pressed it against him, while the other passenger punched him from behind.

Allegedly, the driver was then pulled out of the vehicle, and the settlers ran off with some cash, a GPS and a cell phone.

Police forces that were dispatched to the scene cordoned off the area and tracked the settlers down at a nearby valley, along with the stolen goods. The suspects, who are known to the police, admitted to the robbery and to another mugging as well. The suspects were scheduled to be arraigned by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Saturday night saw a number of Arab drivers being targeted by dozens of haredi Jews on Yehezkel Street in Jerusalem. A driver and a passenger were lightly injured from tear gas, and several taxis were damaged. Police officers rescued the drivers and detained three assailants. Police said additional arrests are expected.

About a month ago an Arab taxi driver attacked by religious Jews at the capital's Shabbat Square.
