The Palestinian Authority has decided to remove security from the home of Nabil Amr, a former PLO ambassador to Egypt who criticized President Mahmoud Abbas
for delaying a debate
on a United Nations committee report,
which accused Israel
and Hamas
of committing war crimes in Gaza.
Amr recently resigned his post in the aftermath of the Goldstone Report. He is scheduled to return Sunday to his home in Ramallah.
The former ambassador has been subject to many threats over recent years as a well-known critic of Yasser Arafat, and in 2004 gunfire was opened on his home. He was severely injured in his leg in the attack, and the PA placed guards at his home after the assassination attempt.
Amr told Palestinian news agency Maan that he was surprised to discover the guards had been removed, but said it would not postpone his return home.
Amr, a close aide to Abbas until a few months ago, said in a rare outburst last week that the latter was personally responsible for the UN's postponement of discussion on the Goldstone Report.
