Israel's National Insurance Institute has announced a drop in unemployment for the moth of September, with 6% fewer people applying for unemployment pay.

Around 17,000 new unemployment claims were received by the institute in September, as opposed to 18,000 in August.

The number of new claims is also 15% lower than in April of this year, but the institute stresses that the number is still high in comparison with pre-economic crisis years.

Altogether 92,000 unemployment claims were filed in September, a 50% increase from the same month in 2008.

"The drop in claims by newly unemployed people matches the evening off of the economic crisis and the moderation of the wave of layoffs that followed it," said the director-general of the National Insurance Institute, Esther Dominissini.

Despite the encouraging data, however, the Bank of Israel has predicted a rise in unemployment. According to reports published Monday, the percentage is expected to jump from its current rate of 8.1% to 8.3% by 2010.
