Dozens rally against deportation of illegal workers' kids

Government's continued debate regarding possibility of deporting Israeli-born children of illegal foreign workers sparks yet another demonstration as 100 people gather in Tel Aviv to protest

Over 100 demonstrators rallied in Tel Aviv Tuesday evening to protest the impending deportation of Israeli-born children of illegal workers.

Demonstrators were carrying signs reading "Israeli kids – Israeli citizenship," and "These children are not foreigners."

Monday saw Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hold a special meeting on the controversial matter. Interior Minister Eli Yishai reiterated his adamant refusal to grant the children and their parents citizenship, going as far as telling the prime minister that should he decide to override his authority on the matter, he may as well "take the Interior Ministry away from me."

No final decision on the matter has been made at this time, but the 1,200 children are likely to be deported by the end of the school year.

Earlier Tuesday, Tziki Sela, commander of Interior Ministry's special immigration Oz Unit, tendered his resignation after only six months. A subsequent Interior Ministry statement said the Minister Yishai "regrettably accepted" Sela's decision. No new commander has been named as this time.

While Sela's official reason for stepping down was continuous wage delays, some in human rights groups dedicated to the cause of illegal foreign workers did not exclude personal ethics as a reason: "Oz (unit) came under harsh criticism and I would like to believe his conscience was his reason for resigning."
