Police have arrested six Israelis for suspicion of smuggling some 150,000 liters (about 34,000 gallons) of diesel fuel from Cyprus.

Detectives from the Lahav 433 elite investigative unit raided the suspects' homes on Tuesday and confiscated material that may link them to the smuggling.

According to police, the oil tanks were smuggled aboard a fishing boat.

A few weeks ago detectives from the National Financial Crimes Unit launched a covert investigation into the alleged smuggling based on intelligence gathered by Israel Police and the Israel Tax Authority.

According to suspicions, the Israelis purchased the fuel from owners of infrastructure companies in Cyprus at a reduced rate.

Police also suspect that some of the fuel was diluted to increase profit margins.
