Channel 2 fires Arab reporter over Shalit scoop
Gaza correspondent Sliman al-Shafi loses job at news network two months after promoting his book on captive soldier on air
Channel 2 correspondent Sliman al-Shafi has been fired, Ynet learned on Wednesday. Al-Shafi was informed of the decision in a meeting with Channel 2 CEO Avi Weiss.
The reporter had been suspended two months ago following his report on the state of captive soldier Gilad Shalit, after having failed to inform his superiors that the item originated from a book he wrote that had been published shortly after.
Al-Shafi acted as the channel's correspondent in Gaza for many years and has reported under fire and during battles between Israel and the Palestinians. He has even been detained by the Israel Defense Forces on several occasions.
Al-Shafi's book is based on testimonies collected from Palestinian sources who claimed to have been involved in the abduction and confinement of Gilad Shalit in a Gaza hideout.
Despite the dismissal, al-Shafi has yet to receive an official discharge notice.
Responding to Channel 2's decision, the reporter said, "I received no official notice. For 50 days I have had only rumors to go by. If it turns out to be true it is one of the most miserable decisions ever made by the Israeli media."
No comment was received from Channel 2.
